Quick Tips

As a newborn photographer in Cary, North Carolina, my top priority is making sure your experience is stress-free and enjoyable. Bringing a new baby home is both exciting and stressful. Here are 7 tips that will help you to prepare for your in-home newborn session!

1. Keep it warm.

There is a good chance we will get some pictures of baby without their clothes on so make sure to keep the temperature a few degrees warmer then you may normally keep it. Babies like to be warm and cozy!

2. Try to feed baby ~30 minutes before your session start time.

We can take as many breaks as necessary to feed, baby is in charge, but a good rule of thumb is to try to start with a nice full tummy. That will help with the cozy factor listed above.

3. Dress yourselves comfortably.

It’s super important that you are comfortable. This goes for everyone involved in the session. Comfy people are happy people (especially kiddos). Also, make sure you choose to wear something that makes you feel good and that you feel confident in.

4. Keep baby’s wardrobe simple.

We’ve all been there, we have all purchased the cute baby clothes, shoes, bows, etc. but keeping your baby’s outfit simple will keep your photos timeless and will keep the focus on your beautiful new baby. I’m happy to try to incorporate any special clothing but for the majority of our session I highly recommend a simple, snug onesie. Side note: Your baby does indeed like to be swaddled so make sure to have a couple on hand.

5. Don’t clean up just for your photographer!

You have a WHOLE lot going on right now. Please, please, PLEASE do not clean up for me! Lifestyle newborn photography tells a story and your environment is part of that story. If needed I may tidy up certain things but for the most part just leave it as  is. If you feel like you really want to clean, our session will most likely take place in the master bedroom and the nursery.

6. Prepare the siblings.

Let your other kiddos know in advance that you have a visitor coming over to take pictures of them with their new sibling. Their part of the session will be short and sweet and then they can be on their way to play if they would like. It’s also totally fine if they come in and out throughout the session time.

7. RELAX

This is the biggest tip that I have for you and is really the biggest tip for any photography session. Parents set the tone. Stay calm and relax. Your session is a no judgment zone. Kids can be a mess sometimes, babies cry, things happen. It’s totally fine, I’ve been there. Your kiddos and even that sweet baby will feed off of your energy. They will know if you are tense or stressed. I’ve got you, no worries. This is YOUR story.
